A few years ago, through no particular fault of my own, I was a victim of identity theft.  I found out about it half by accident, when my cellphone provider informed me that their records showed two entirely separate accounts under my social security number.  The other had been closed for nonpayment.
To make a long story short, it was like pulling teeth getting anyone to care about the situation.  I get it cleared but it wasn't easy.  So I strongly recommend to anyone with a lot to lose, to have a company monitor your credit affairs.  Lexington Law does it best.

Lexington Law claims that 79% of all credit reports contain errors, a very scary number.  And they say their clients average 10 report deletions in the first 90 days, a very valuable service.   The 'Get Started' button on their homepage takes you to a simple new client form that enlists their legal fleet to examine your credit report immediately.
